Email from City of Swan - Homelessness Week: Free Movie Night
We will be screening the Undercover Documentary, which raises awareness of the growing number of women over 50 experiencing homelessness in Australia. We will be running a donation at the event, so all attendees are welcome to give or take form the donation box. There will also be some free movie snacks and drinks.

SJOG is in its 10th year of support from Swan Rotary. The Stroke unit in Midland has a strong commitment to supporting the midland community, and in particular the Aboriginals in the area who have had a stroke.
With the research and work that has been completed into Strokes recently, you can rest assured that if you call for an ambulance while having a stroke, you will receieve the very best
In the past 6 to 7 years, there have been a larger number of young people, around the age of 40, presenting after having a stroke. It is not related to the covid vaccine, and are still not sure why the number hahas increased, but it has been happening since bbefore COVID, and is possible in the past a minor stroke sometimes mmisdiagnosed as a migraine.
It is important to keep your blood presure and diabetes under control to minimise likelihood of a Stroke.
The history: Swan Districts Hospital was a test site for a stroke clinic, Joondalup then copied the Swans model, and now Armadale looking to copy the SJOG model.
In Country areas, the State gov. has implimented telehealth for stroke, 24.7 phone advice and CT scans visable, in towns where CT machines are located.
Another way to minimise the effects of Strokes is by educating people about stroke
Remember the accronym FAST - Face, arm, speech, time to do something.
Lynda - Stroke research nurse
Lynda started at SJOG 9 years ago, and this year was lucky enough to attended the European Stroke Organisation Conference, ESOC 2025 - held in Helsinki, Finland.
She was one of 4200 participants, and one of four who attended from from SJOG Midland.
To begin, Lynda gave us some information on Stroke education -
Some causes - uncontrolled high blood presure, high cholesterol, some infections, age, diabetes, obesity , smoking
The first Four and a Half hours, is crucial as the response is a clot busting drug, which significantly increases the recovery time after a stroke.
FAST is the message
Face, arm, speech, time to do something.
The program highlights:
burden of stroke, economic, leading cause of disabilities.
2023 - 45000 Aus, 30000 1st stroke 1 in 4 under 65 years age (affecting working age)
Some Stroke prevention and current trials that are happening around the world.
PINS - Phone based intervention under nurse direction. in Ghana.
in 3rd world countries everyone has a mobile phone. smart phone and a bluetooth BP device. Is a pilot study that they will roll out further.

home based tailored intervention. safety, education, risk
reduced falls rate post stroke by 30%
Aspiring trial - Hemoragic stroke, in Edinburgh
Starting them on Asprin, to reduce lieklyhood of ischaemic stroke.
Mobile Stroke Unit - has a CT scanner in it, to tellehelath to DR to treat early and treat fast.
Currently none in WA , but in VIC.
Lynda ended her presentation with a video from Melinda Roaldsen, a clinical researcher who suffered a stroke and used it as motivation to get better after her stroke.

Paul Dyer - The CEO of SJOG Midland
Paul shared some of the projects that are at the top of the list of of SJOG Midland.
- Neurodiversity Care Program to support patients with autism in the Emergency Department (ED) - Which is a project that Swan Rotary is closely involved in.
- Partnered with MIDLASS to have a free full time lawyer in the ED for people to access who are suffereing from domestic violence.
- Supporting Aboriginal women to attend neonatel and perinatel appointments.
All of which have had great support from the SJOG foundation.
There is some construction happening, some parking issues at the moment, a new dishwasher - need to strip the room and purpose build. replacing the revolving door at the entrance.
The new private hospital is due to open in August 2026. SJOG Midland will become public. everything is currently on time and on budget.
The SJOG expansion - there is funding for about 60 beds, a multistory carpark, a couple of wards, and a theater.
